What is “Early Literacy” and why is it important before beginning Kindergarten?
We understand that going to Kindergarten is a BIG deal. It can be hard for both children and the parents! Parents wonder, “Will they make friends? Will they learn well? Will they have fun? Will they thrive?” But one of the most asked questions is . . . ”Are they ready?”
Many of these skills are learned through play. We believe that play is very important to young learners in their development which is why it is incorporated into each of our programs.
One more crucially important skill to Kindergarten Readiness is early literacy. Early literacy isn’t teaching a child to read at a young age. Early literacy is the process of helping children to develop the skills that they will need in order to become confident readers. Research shows that in order to read, a young child must master a variety of foundational skills that lead up to reading.
According to a 20-year study published by the Institute of Education Sciences* last year, children can absolutely benefit from “early literacy” and “pre-reading” programs that break these skills down into individual achievable exercises. Building skills such as oral language, alphabetic code, phonological awareness and concept of print allows learning to read to become a fun and exciting process when it is time them to learn.
That is what we do at The Reading Studio! We want you to know that this learning journey does not have to be stressful. Every child is different and that’s great! We have programs for every level of pre-reader and reader that are fun and build your child’s confidence.
Reading support doesn’t have to end when you send your children off to Kindergarten…The Reading Studio has classes and tutoring sessions that can accompany and enhance what they are learning, with tutoring sessions going all the way up to 5th grade. Whether your child is struggling to read or just needs additional support, The Reading Studio has you covered!
